Styling Your Dream Photo Session

On a couple of occasions I have mentioned the notion of “styling sessions”, but today I wanted to go into a bit more detail about what that entails and exactly how booking a shoot with me unfolds. The thing is that I am absolutely determined to have you be THRILLED with the final photos. And I have found that the clients who leave the happiest are the ones that are more involved in the process, than simply showing up and hoping for the best.

When you first contact me by phone or by e-mail to book a session, I schedule a pre-session consultation in addition to choosing a date for the actual photoshoot. This consult is an in-person meeting that allows us to set the stage for the big day.

At the forefront of my mind during these consults is acquiring a clear understanding of your vision. Why did you want this session? What are you hoping and dreaming of getting as a final result? Are you aiming for lifestyle photos that capture your family in its natural state or of more posed photos?

With this information as our framework, we get to work creating the session. You pick your background, props and outfits in the colour scheme of your choice. As you will see below, all of my props are separated by colour to make things easy. I also provide you a link to my Pinterest page so that you can get some pointers on outfit choices as the shoot approaches. For the record, if you’re intimidated by the process because you’re not sure what it is you want, I am more than happy to provide my opinions and guidance.

The consult is also an opportunity to discuss the importance of parents and siblings participating in the session. My goal is to create memories that instill a sense of intimacy of your family as a whole and is very important to me as a photographer. This is also an ideal time to discuss the financial component of the session.

When I am shooting, I always keep in mind you plan on doing with the images and let that guide the way I work. Things like angles, close ups for albums or photos styled traditionally for wall display, are all things that I can adapt for based on the information I got during the consult.  Be sure to scroll down to see two examples of album layouts ready to be printed and admired.
